In this issue we would like to inform you of a few developments in terms of special events at AILA 2008 and also remind you of the deadline for the Call for Papers, which is February 28, 2007.

We would like to apologise for cross-postings.

AILA 2008—Selected Programme Highlights

The following news might be of interest for those planning to attend AILA 2008:

A special thread of symposia on Europe specific topics to be held at AILA 2008

  • The potential of linguistic diversity in Europe will be our collective heading for symposia on specific European topics to be presented at AILA 2008 World Congress of Applied Linguistics in Essen, Germany.
  • The representatives of European AILA affiliates decided to promote this thread as an opportunity to profile European Applied Linguistics. The thread of symposia is open to inclusion of topics such as:
    • Language Exposures to Immigrants
    • Media communication
    • Emotional Settings
    • Learning within and outside the education environment
    • Testing of Language Competence of Immigrants
    •  …
  • Proposals for symposia relating to linguistic perspectives on such aspects of European uniqueness are welcome. These are to submitted and screened via the usual channels. For the Call for Papers see www.aila2008.org.
  • For questions concerning the European thread of symposia please contact the AILA 2008 Europe coordinators: Daniel Perrin (daniel.perrin@bluewin.ch) and Michael Klemm (klemm@uni-koblenz.de).

Council of Europe's European Centre for Modern Languages (ECML) to contribute to AILA 2008

  • Discussions were held at the Council of Europe's European Centre for Modern Languages (ECML) in Graz in January to define a framework for the Centre's and the Council of Europe's involvement in AILA 2008. One of the options which emerged at that meeting was that the ECML is interested in offering a special symposium on its projects and activities at the Essen congress. In addition, those submitting a proposal under the new ECML 2008-2011 programme entitled EMPOWERING LANGUAGE PROFESSIONALS: Competences—Networks—Impact—Quality, might want to consider using the AILA World Congress as a platform for presenting their projects and work in progress to a world-wide audience. Further information on this call for proposals is available at http://www.ecml.at/call/

German Association of Foreign Language Research to offer special symposia at AILA 2008

  • The DGFF, i.e. the German Association of Foreign Language Research, will offer special symposia at AILA 2008, dealing with issues such as current research in foreign language teaching and learning and Research Topics in Multilingualism in Germany. DGFF is also encouraging its members to submit proposals for additional papers, thus ensuring that delegates from around the world will be given an opportunity to network with colleagues in Applied Linguistics in general as well as those more specifically involved in Foreign Language Teaching in Germany.
