Museum Folkwang
The basis of this museum is the Karl Ernst Osthaus collection. Osthaus, who was an industrialist from Haagen, presented the first world-wide exhibition of modern art in 1902 by making his collection open to all levels of society. Following the patron’s death, the city of Essen bought the works. Today all periods of art are represented in the museum from superb romantic works through to present day avant-garde. Paintings, graphics and sculptures from the 19th and 20th centuries have been complemented through a first-class collection showing the history of photography. In addition to this, the museum devotes itself to promoting contemporary art. Special exhibitions occur regularly where works can be seen by such artists as van Gogh, Gauguin, Turner, Cézanne or as in 2006 Caspar David Friedrich.
