Receptive Multilingualism I

Organiser Rehbein, Jochen
U of Hamburg
· Germany

Receptive multilingualism refers to interlingual discourse in which interlocutors use their respective mother tongues with the effect that they understand each other. Since the mid-nineties receptivemultilingualism has been promoted by the European Commission together with other ways of increasing the mobility of the European citizens (e.g. English as lingua franca). Symposium I deals with multilingual constellations with a different language-typological and sociolinguistic make-up in which speakers have a diversity of languages and varieties at their disposal out of which they can choose the one(s) they assess as suitable for the reception of what they say.
