Free U of Berlin · Germany · The Open U ·UK / U of Jyväskylä · Finland
The media plays a central role in how English spreads and penetrates into everyday life in European societies, and, therefore, a thorough analysis of the use of English there gives insight into the changing role of English as part of European multilingualism. Major themes focused on in this symposium include (1) an investigation into public discussions and linguistic policy statements in response to the use of English in the media; (2) an analysis of the role of English in the creation and maintenance of lifestyles, identities, cultures and communities; and (3) how English interacts with national and other local languages in European mediascapes to serve both local and global means.
